Dwarves of Shadowgate

Dwarves are short, stocky humanoids typically characterized by their strength and strong constitution. They usually have a ruddy complexion and dark eyes and hair. They keep long beards that they will often braid or decorate so as to keep it out of their way in a good fight, which they love. Dwarves are rather pessimistic and sour and care little for humor, but they are also very hard working. They enjoy a strong drink and love precious metals and gems which they mine in their mountain homes. They also love the earth and have a strong dislike of the sea and other bodies of water. They are not particularly fond of horses because they are hard to ride with the stocky build of a dwarf, but they do not have a problem with ponies. They also have a strong dislike for arcane magic, for which they have no affinity. They are not fond of elves and they hate orcs and goblins with a passion. With the exception of their duergar cousins, most dwarves are of good alignment.

The most common line of dwarf kind, they are less accepting of outsiders than their gold dwarf cousins, being slow to bestow trust on others. They maintain a strong tradition of military skill and warfare, but while they still hold great pride in their bloodlines, more emphasis is placed upon personal achievement. Fond of wealth as their cousins, they do however avoid decadent behaviour and displays, often regarding their more arrogant gold dwarf cousins as naive. They tend to be a little taller than gold dwarves, with fair to lightly tanned skin, and eyes that are usually green or silvered blue. They have red to light brown hair, which they wear long, with males (and some females) sporting carefully groomed beards and moustaches. They tends towards lawful alignment.

One of the two most common kinds of dwarf, they are renowned as much for their smithwork as their military prowess, and their legendary stores of wealth. They place importance on divisions of clan and class, with nobility and royal lines providing rulership to their clans and underground cities. Pride and honor is important to them, as the failure of a single dwarf reflects on his entire clan and ancestors. They are terribly fond of riches, and displays of wealth are important to the prestige of a gold dwarf. They tend to hold a great pride in their race, often coming across as aloof to outsiders, of which they are naturally suspicious. With skin of light brown to tan, their eyes are usually brown or hazel. They wear their dark hair long, and both genders sport carefully groomed beards and moustaches. They tend towards lawful alignment.

Also known as duergar, these are the darker cousins of their surface-dwelling kin. While similarly famed for their smithwork, they do not share the good spirits of their cousins, being bitter and cheerless creatures. They take little joy in their work, and only cruel jokes and torments will bring a smile to most duergar. Of all the dwarves, they are the only ones known to have any capacity for psionics, stolen long ago from the illithids. Unlike other dwarves, they tend to be tough and lean, with gray skin and dull black eyes. Both genders are bald, and males have gray beards and moustaches.

Non-playable subraces:

Arctic dwarf

Known to their own kind as the Inugaakalikurit, these dwarves live in the frozen northern reaches. Mostly concerned with their own survival, they have less care than their southern cousins for hard work or artisanship, and place little emphasis on clan and bloodline. They prefer to pursue leisure activities, and are fairly open and friendly to strangers. Squat and hardy in build, they are much shorter than their cousins, with blue-white skin (often burnt red from time in the sun) and curly white hair.

Urdunnir dwarf

Rumors tell of dwarves that have become one with the stone, so long have they lived within it. Wandering through the heart of the earth, they are said to be able to walk through the very stone they live within. They are described in lore as stocky creatures with skin of pale gray and eyes of silver. They are said to wear their gray hair long, sometimes with silver or black highlights, and men sport carefully groomed beards and moustaches.
