[OBSOLETE] unarmed combat feat tree

Post by uriel » 23 Sep 2019, 05:51

Hi Ilmarinen,

Just 4 quick ideas regarding the unarmed combat feat tree.

1.) Is there a way that we can make unarmed combat optionally DEX based, as in weapon finesse feat?

2.) The Precise Strikes gives +1/8 character levels. To also mirror the monk class, I would suggest Precise Strikes also giving a critical multiplier = (Levels/10).

3.) Could you please look at the critical threat range for unarmed? Lethal Strikes with a small weapon increases the threat range by 2, so a dual wielder with small weapons can get a threat range of 16-20. I don't see anywhere in the code where the critical threat range for unarmed is addressed, so I am guessing it is actually a pure 20, which is harsh! {edit - looking through combat_d.c it looks like actually the default threat range is 19-20 if there is no weapon involved}

4.) If L40 is going to be the new cap, make Precise Strikes give +1/7 character levels. So at L35, unarmed combat would be +5 to hit and damage. This would compare reasonably well with Monk, which gives +1/6 Monk Levels. For comparison L36 Monk, unarmed combat would be +6 to hit and damage. Currently Precise Strikes gives +1/8 character levels, which means +5 would only be available at L40 which is pretty weak.

Cheers!

Ah, wrong forum?
1. I though weapon finesse already affected str/dex switch?.. At least it does so for monks... If it doesn't for other classess that should be addressed.

2-3. Maybe should make precision feats work instead for non-monks to increase critical threat.

Hi Ilmarinen,

Yeah sure, please move thread if its in the wrong place!

The motivation for this line of thinking is that it is actually quite hard to use a character with the unarmed combat feat tree if you are a non-Monk character.

Unarmored defense would be an outstanding addition to the unarmed combat tree.

Regarding the precision feats -- the precision feats are applied as a series of queries on whether a weapon is wielded, what the threat range is on the weapon, and what the multiplier is on the weapon.

Here's a snip from combat_d.c, 2720 to 2762 (version 2Mar19).

Code: Select all

        //crit stuff
        if(sizeof(weapons) && !who->query_property("shapeshifted"))
        {
            temp1 = (int)current->query_critical_threat_range();
            if(FEATS_D->usable_feat(who, "lethal strikes") && !who->query_property("shapeshifted"))
            {
                if(sizeof(weapons) >= 2)
                {
                    if(weapons[0] != weapons[1]) temp1 += 1;
                    if((int)weapons[0]->query_size() == 1 && (int)weapons[1]->query_size() == 1) temp1 += 1;
                }
                else if(sizeof(weapons) == 1)
                {
                    temp1 += 1;
                    if((int)weapons[0]->query_size() == 1) temp1 += 1;
                }
            }
        }
        else { temp1 = 2; }

        if(roll > (20 - temp1)) // if threat range of weapon is 2, then we have a crit threat on a roll of 19 or 20
        {
            if(!victim->query_property("no crit") && ( !interactive(victim) || ((int)victim->query_level() > 5) ))
            {
                temp2 = BONUS_D->process_hit(who, victim, i, current);
                if(temp2)
                {
                    who->adjust_combat_mapps("static vars", "critical hit", 1);
                    who->adjust_combat_mapps("static vars", "critical message", 1);
                    critical_hit = 1;
                }
            }
        }
        // end crit stuff

Thing is other classes get greater BAB for unarmed.
I looked into SRDs and PF implementations.
But if you feel you're underclassed damage-wise compared to monks.. That's how it should be, but not by much.
If you feel you're underclassed damage-wise compared to weapon wielders... That's how it should be, but not by much.
Other issues have been mostly addressed, so you can build dex-based unarmed fighters. Just don't forget about other means of defense ment for your specific class.
E.g. fighter would have better time smashing things in heavy armour, thief would do better with scramble, psion should concentrate on buff powers and etc.

Looks like we have almost everything on your list already in the game? There is an issue of enchanted fists, but that's maybe all.. Marking as obsolete.
Btw if you want to build an archetype https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-c ... d-fighter/
