[DONE] On exp punishment

Post by ilmarinen »

So this happens way too often.
Someone complains subj is too harsh, I tune it down.
Then someone complains its nothing, I change it back.
Then someone ocmplains it is unfair for newbs but forgiving for highbies and we get weird plolynoms calculsating it.
I'm just saying...

You all are bad, ban. /me points at the bancorner.

How about you'll muse for a week or two what you want here in this topic, then give tl;dr summary and we never touch this code again ,even if peeps complain.

It sounded like the problem in the last post was that there's nowhere to level when you're stuck in a dungeon. Then when you die, you lose all your negative xp in addition to the 10%. Maybe we could add some safe areas - 'ancient church ruins' and the like - to those dungeons so people can go there to advance?

... but it sounds like in his bug report he lost all his negative XP to next level... it shouldn't have wiped out all of his negative XP as well as dropping him 10% of his xp, that seems weird.

... Is the additional XP penalty for not following a god still in as well?

That changed recently, too....

I found no traces of that penalty anywhere. It had been disabled somewhen before your backup too...

My view is that losing all negative XP and then a percentage on top of that seems excessively punishing. I believe the percentage loss should be enough on death.

Also... What is the rationale for only being able to advance in certain locations? Is this something that we need to keep?

Advancing on the spot does sound interesting. I'm assuming it was that you needed a space where you felt safe and calm enough to go over your experiences and learn something new from them. I know in 5e, we have to long rest for it, and I forget about 3.5 or 3.75, but I think it was the same there, for somewhat similar reasons.

That all said, it's still an interesting notion. Maybe it takes a minute or so to level up if you do it in the wild.

Sorry if I opened up an old wound. It may be an old issue to you but it was new to me. If the way it is, is the way it is supposed to be then so-be-it. At the very least make it known in the /help death/ file that all negative cup will be lost too. I did read through what I could find before speaking up about it on ooc line. It was just a major shock to take a 64% xp hit for one death.

Wait until you get hit at higher levels. 64% is nothing.

Well I would hope that would be something because if you are suggesting that is normal, I would think that would knock a level 50 character back down to around level 30? To be honest I know that is not the norm and this was a special circumstance that happened to me. I’m not even trying to complain, just conversing about it and asking questions.

64% of total experience is a lot and caused because of losing all negative xp on top of the normal penalty.

64% of a single level is nothing compared to higher levels, but that is not what happened and doesn't apply.

Maybe changing the calculation to be based off of total experience instead of level, that way they get a higher penalty for being in the negatives but it is just at the rate as if they had advanced already.

I think it's already on a curve, with sub-40's usually losing less than a level and post-40's losing at least one full level?

I've lost a level several times long before lvl 40 with my new character. Even before level 30 I think.

is banking negative exp really much of an issue?

I think the real issue is that your neg exp banking should just auto cap after a character gets so much.

EX:
Having enough exp to advance more than 2 levels just gets capped until they advance.
