mind flayer, illithid - Cthulhukin
Also, decription change: Cthonics are very tall, very slender humanoid creatures. The often reach between 7 and 9 feet, but only weigh about 30lbs. They have no problem hunching over, squatting, or crawling in order to fit in the smaller of the caves that they favor as home. Their skin is usually either pallid white, sickly green or yellow, or a dusky indigo.
Their most prominent feature is their face. Though following the general shape of a human's face, there is only smooth skin where one would expect a mouth, a nose, or even ears. They do have eye sockets, but instead of eyeballs, they have a plethora of tentacles that can reach about twice the Cthonic's height. Whether or not these tentacles have barbs, chameleon-like eyes, branching feelers or grasping suckers or other adaptation is based on what the Cthonic does in their society. Much like a snail, these tentacles could also retract almost completely into the socket, only the tips visible.
This is useful for when they hunt down their prey, as the average creature would focus on the Cthonic's sharp claws, and not realize that the real threat reach far beyond that grasp. Cthonics, lacking a mouth or many internal organs, do not survive on flesh. Psionic creatures, they consume strong emotions, and especially the hormones and secretions from the brain. They like to lie in wait for their prey, and then attack with the equivalent of a mental stab, before closing in on their prey.
While combat commences, they let their hive siblings take over concentrating on combat while they essentially "hack" into the person's brain. On a success, they will cause the creature to hallucinate with all five major senses, and imagines a scenario, given the creatures memories, that will elicit strong emotions while the physical body is taken hold of or, if there were multiple enemies, taken away from the fight. Cthonics can consume emotions of any flavor, but fear is an insatiable delicasy for them, and so they generally prefer mental torture.
Cthonics, as mentioned, share a hivemind with several others. Their hives can vary from a handful to hundreds. Their hidden cities can hold multiple hives at once. There is no central figure in Cthonic society, just the Many. They very rarely war with each other, and are usually amenable to allying with other hives. There are occasional solo Cthonics, and these are often young Cthonics travelling to join a different city to find a hive, or perhaps an older one changing hives. However, seeing a single Cthonic doesn't mean that it is one of these. It may be a hunter for the hive and has the minds of its siblings to help it capture you. The more intelligent the prey, the longer they survive as both slave and snack, so sentient races are their preferred prey.
