[DONE] Compiling Hints and Tips

Post by titania » 03 Aug 2019, 18:53

Hi people! I am compiling a list of possible hints and tips that newbies (or anyone) can opt-in to receive periodically while logged in. An example of this might be:

[TIP] You can use <rumors> to find other players and see a list of places you can currently adventure to!

Ya know, things that are pretty helpful but might otherwise go overlooked by players who are flooded with new information and help files, etc.

If anyone can think of stuff to add to my list, please post it here. Or mail me (Titania) in the game, or drop me a msg on Discord (ViolaRose).

Thanks for your help in this!

You might find <map> and <mmap> useful for finding a way around.
({"cleric","mage","druid"}) You will find preparation lists very useful. It is worth the time to learn to use them. Refer to <help prepare>
Tabor and Shadow have maps of the world on display in city centres.
There is a teleportation network connecting Shadow, Azha, Tonovi, Verbobone and Seneca.
You can get inbetween Shadow, Tabor and Tharis with river ferry. Tabor ferry located just south of the city gates, Tharis one is to the north of city gates, and Shadow ferry is inside the city.
Deku, Graez and Shadow areconnected by the sea ferry.
Major cities, like Tabor or Verbobone, have wandering psions that will lend you their telepathic powers to contact other people.
Some cities have vandering merchants that sell materials for crafting.
Tabor and Verbobone are homes to vandering wizards that can identify an item for you, and perhaps tell its story.

-New casters will find it helpful to visit the "new caster guide" located on the forum-

-Looking to take your emotes to the next level? Check out <help emoteat guide>-

- Coloring the text that appears when your character speaks is popular among our players, but did you know colored says can cause problems when interacting with coded npcs? To avoid this, make a separate alias for say with no colors. -

- Anything you attack (or that attacks you), is assigned the ID "attacker". If you're having difficulties targeting npcs or mobs with your spells or feats, try directing them at "attacker". -

- Did you know that you can nickname anything, making it much easier to type quickly? See <help nickname> -

- Remeber to <save> before you <quit> to protect your gear and progress from unforeseen bugs.-

- There is a merc for hire just west of Shadow that will make your adventuring life a little safer.-

- Food will spoil without warning if you keep it in your inventory for too long and make you sick. Luckily, waterskins never spoil (just remember to refill it in the general store that sold it to you) and you can use the <forage> command to find food in the wilderness. -

Thank you Ilmarinen and Kismet for your contributions! If anyone else has any advice that would have really helped them out as a new player, please let us know. Here's what I have so far:

[HINT] You can disable these messages by typing <hint off>. Enable them by typing <hint on>. Or see all of them at once by typing <hint all>.

[HINT] You can track your own progress or keep character notes by using pcnotes. <help pcnotes> for more information!

[HINT] Found a cool piece of gear only to realize it doesn’t fit? No matter! Certain shopkeepers will resize it. Be warned, it isn’t cheap!

[HINT] Use <get all coins> instead of <get coins> to pick all your piles up at once.

[HINT] The THOUGHT command lets you communicate your character’s thoughts so that only the immortals and avatars will know them! Just type <thought [msg]>.

[HINT] Please join us on Discord! https://bit.ly/discord-sg

[HINT] The PEER command allows you to look ahead for any dangers. <peer [direction] [# of rooms]>

[HINT] The BONUSES will show you the things currently affecting your stats and rolls. Give it a try!

[HINT] The LIMBS command allows you to see what gear is where on your body.

[HINT] Tired of so much colorful combat spam? Typing BRIEFCOMBAT will help.

[HINT] Using the BUFF command allows casters to refresh their defensive spells in a single command. See <help buff> for more information!

[HINT] Typing RUMORS shows you places appropriate for you to adventure, as well as if anyone is hanging out in the major cities or inns!

[HINT] Most quest givers will be prompted by simply saying hello. If this does not work, try looking at them. Usually their description will hint at the appropriate action.

[HINT] Find a typo or a bug or you simply wish to offer an idea or a praise? Type <help game> to see your options!

[HINT] Bio quests can be a great way to earn some extra money, experience, or crafting materials. Please read <help biography> for more information.

[HINT] Customize your prompt however you would like! See <help prompt> to learn how!

[HINT] SETENV allows you to control your screen settings, such as size and scrolling. See <help setenv> to learn more.

[HINT] Did you know there’s a color editor to make adding colors to your descriptions easier? Find it here: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=11

[HINT] Love ShadowGate and want to help us grow and thrive??! Please vote for us! Type VOTE for information on how you can help. We truly appreciate it!

[HINT] Need a little extra help in combat? Visit the mercenary camp west of Shadow, and tell Sault you need to hire a mercenary.

[HINT] View Kismet’s brilliant Emote Guide to learn how to up your emoting game! viewtopic.php?f=16&t=83

[HINT] Casting complications? Kismet’s guide can help! viewtopic.php?f=16&t=123

[HINT] All heroes need a trusty sidekick! See <help horse guide> to learn more.

[HINT] Upset your new boots don’t match the color of your eyes? Have no fear! ALTEROBJ allows you to customize everything to your personal satisfaction. See <help alterobj> for more information.

[HINT] Find item collectors in some of the major cities who will award you exp for returning lost artifacts from across the realms!

[HINT] Ferries for the less walking-inclined connect Shadow and Tabor, and Tharis and Tabor. Docks can be found near their respective cities.

[HINT] Low on funds and can’t afford to rent or buy a boat? Ferries are available with stops at the Mainland, Laerad, Deku and Graez. Look for the local seaports to view your options.

[HINT] Telepaths are employed by the cities of Shadow and Tabor if you need to communicate with someone across a distance. Just tell them who you need to speak to, and they’ll happily oblige (for a fee)!

[HINT] Many major cities have portals that allow you to travel quickly between the cities and islands!

[HINT] Tabor and Verbobone have hired local wizards who will study or identify your gear for a small fee! Find them for more information.

[HINT] Tabor and Shadow both offer maps of their surrounding areas. Quite helpful for the well-prepared adventurer.

[HINT] Make your own maps using the MMAP command! See <help mmap> to learn more.

[HINT] Need to slander someone’s good name, or let the world know of your heroic deeds? Try out the GOSSIP command to learn how to spread some dirt.

[HINT] The PREPARE command is one of the strongest resources in the casters toolbox. Learn it! Use it! You’ll be happy you did. See <help prepare> to learn more!

[HINT] Using NICKNAME and ALIAS can greatly reduce the amount of time it takes to enter commands.

[HINT] Crafters rejoice! Material vendors are out and about to sell you whatever sort of fabric, metal, wood, etc., that you need. You might even find a settled shop or two to buy quality materials to complete your projects.

[HINT] The FLAG command allows you to set preferences for how you gain experience, whether you want to be involved in PK, and it even allows you to flag a room for roleplay. See <help flag> for more information.

[HINT] Typing <flag> will show you your current flagged settings as well as any current bonus events happening!

[HINT] Coloring the text that appears when your character speaks is popular among our players, but did you know colored says can cause problems when interacting with coded npcs? To avoid this, make a separate alias for say with no colors.

[HINT] Anything you attack (or that attacks you), is assigned the ID "attacker". If you are having difficulties targeting npcs or mobs with your spells or feats, try directing them at "attacker".

[HINT] Remember to <save> before you <quit> to protect your gear and progress from unforeseen bugs.

[HINT] Food will spoil without warning if you keep it in your inventory for too long and make you sick. Luckily, waterskins never spoil (just remember to refill it in the general store that sold it to you).

[HINT] You can use the FORAGE command to find food in the wilderness. You can also drink from some ponds and fountains.

Also please feel free to point out my typos, fake news, or other nonsense. Thanks everyone!

You may block an exit with <block> command. When blocking, npcs and other players might have trouble getting past you.

Hints are fully implemented. Additions should be suggested through <game idea> from now on.
Wiz can edit /d/common/text/hints
Outsider can send `git patch`.
